If you’re just getting started with more focus on movement, I highly recommend simply focusing on just moving your body in ways you enjoy. Don’t over-complicate things with complex plans and detailed exercise regimens. You don’t need to hit the gym or do HIIT (unless you love them). Start with a plan to simply MOVE your body for 10 minutes daily. With time build that time to 20 or even 30 minutes daily. Walk, swim, dance, clean – do things that you enjoy (ok, so maybe not clean) that get your heart pumping and your muscles working. This will help you develop a great base of functional fitness AND build and engrain a habit of movement into your lifestyle! #winning

Once you have that base of healthy movement the conversation can begin to shift to more specific fitness outcomes. #cool

But WHAT exactly does that look like?

That depends on a number of factors – to start with…what do you want to do with your body? What activities do you really enjoy?

For example, if you want to run 10k or dragon boat or do a specific pose in yoga – those things require more specific fitness practice. But the specific practice required to develop those capabilities will differ (in some cases quite dramatically)!

  • Running 10k will require you to develop cardiorespiratory conditioning and muscular endurance.
  • Dragon boating will require a combination of core strength, muscular endurance and cardiorespiratory conditioning.
  • Performing a specific yoga pose will require flexibility, muscular strength and balance.

Exactly how you get “there” will depend on what you’re wishing to do…and…

It will also depend on where you’re starting, your innate capabilities and your time available – notice the common denominator?

YOU!

If you have specific fitness related outcomes you’re hoping to achieve this year it will take some more thought to map out a plan to help you get there.

With a good plan in hand you can do it.

Remember that regardless of your overall intention – movement or formal fitness – practice kindness and self-compassion. You’re human (not a robot), and along the way you’ll need to tweak, adjust and modify your plan to evolve right alongside you!
