Do you ever feel like you’re missing some BIG SECRET to motivation. Why is it that some people seem so incredibly motivated and some days it feels like you’re just surviving? This fascinates me too – as a human & as a coach. Which is why any time I hear about a great book about habits I’m intrigued.
I’m currently digging into Gretchen Rubin’s book “Better than Before.” In it she talks all about how the “trick” to motivation is habit. Let me explain.
Does it ever feel like when you wake up in the morning as you continue through your day your motivation wanes? Yeah, you and every other human! This is because habits you are working on changing don’t come “naturally” – they require conscious thought or choice. When we need to make too many conscious choices it is tiring. So the TRICK is this – take the CHOICE out of the equation by making it a habit.
Think of it this way. When you wake up in the morning you don’t think “don’t forget to brush your teeth, don’t forget to brush your teeth, don’t forget to brush your teeth.” You just DO it. It’s a habit. A routine one.
I call these non-negotiables. They’re the things you do without thinking. They’re simply DONE – and they’re done DAILY. Because health isn’t about the grand gestures you make. It’s about the seemingly small CONSISTENT choices you make. And by making them less conscious and more habitual – you’ve taken MOTIVATION out of the equation. #boom #superyoulifehack
Sure, to some I may look highly motivated. But the fact is I still struggle with NEW habits just as you do. But some of my health habits – exercising daily, generally eating whole, nourishing foods, sleeping 7 hours per night – are now routine. I don’t think about them.
You can do this too. Tackle ONE habit at a time (for goodness sake’s don’t do them all at once – that’s TOO much thinking and a recipe for overwhelm). One at a time. Small shifts. Be successful. Layer more on once you’re successful.
I created Super You to empower people to be fit & confident. To help you feel inspired to make healthy choices – and in doing so inspire those around you.
